Inside FTA's Biggest Week of the Year: World Futsal Championships & The Finals in Orlando

For six straight days this July, the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando turned into the center of the youth futsal universe, and FTA was right in the middle of it. Between the World Futsal Championships (July 14-16) and The Finals, the championship stage of United Futsal's Champions Cup Series (July 17-19), FTA sent 12 teams onto the court for a combined 60 matches, from our U9s all the way up to our U18s. It was one of the largest contingents any single club brought to either event.

This is the piece we wanted to write for our families: what these tournaments actually are, what it means to compete there, and how our players did.

Inside the World Futsal Championships & The Finals

If you've never been to Orlando for this, it's hard to describe the scale. Both events are run by United Futsal, which operates one of the largest youth futsal competition networks in the world. The World Futsal Championships is billed as the largest international youth futsal tournament in the United States, teams from across the country and abroad, ages 6 to 17, filling the North Hall of the OCCC with 21 full-sized futsal courts running side by side from morning until night. The Finals is the culmination of United Futsal's season-long Champions Cup Series, the pathway that clubs work toward all year, and it draws a similarly stacked field of teams that have qualified through regional competition.

Every division at both events runs the same way: round-robin pool play first, then a bracket, Gold, Silver, Bronze, and (depending on division size) Copper, with everyone playing for a real placement, all the way down to a final game. Nobody just shows up and plays three games and goes home. Every team on our roster played a minimum of five matches across pool play and bracket rounds.

Why We Go

We don't take 12 teams to Orlando in one week because it's easy. It isn't. It's a logistical week for our families and our coaching staff both. We go because of what's on the other side of the net.

At this level, our players aren't just playing local competition, they're sharing the court with some of the top clubs in the country and internationally, and in several of our divisions, with current MLS Academy players. That matters. It's one thing to be the best team in your local league. It's another to find out, in real time, what the actual ceiling looks like - where your team's touch, speed, and decision-making stack up against the best in the country. That's the entire point of a trip like this: not just to compete, but to genuinely calibrate. It tells our players and our coaching staff exactly what the next step in development needs to look like.

How Our Teams Get Selected

Every team that makes this trip is built from players across all of our FTA locations, from our Charlotte-area programs to our Raleigh/Triangle programs. There's no separate tryout for Orlando, selection happens through what our coaching staff sees in regular training and league play all season long.

Because this is a national-level competitive event, not every player in our program is selected to attend. The standard is high, and for some players, the distance between their home location and where a specific age group's competitive team trains and travels from is also a factor. We'd rather be direct about that than vague, families deserve to know how the decision actually gets made.

If your player is competitive and this is a trip you want them to be part of, the best thing you can do is make sure your team's coach knows that, and start early. Selection happens well ahead of the tournament, based on what we see across the full season, not in the weeks before.

A Tradition Since 2017

FTA has been making this trip to Orlando since 2017, and every single year the level goes up. It isn't the same tournament it was even three or four years ago, the clubs are stronger, the depth is deeper, and the margin between a good team and a great one keeps shrinking.

That shows up directly in the results. In previous years, FTA has had multiple teams reach the Gold bracket and bring trophies home - our best year, we brought back four, three of them from teams that were finalists in the Gold bracket. This year, we brought home one: our U15 Boys, who finished 3rd in the Gold Division at The Finals. That's less a step back and more a real, honest read on how much tougher this event gets every year - and exactly the kind of data point that tells our players, and us as coaches, where the actual standard sits.

This is a once-a-year event, and there's no second date on the calendar if you miss it. If your player is competitive and wants to be part of this trip, let us know early and start preparing, the dates come around fast.

The Part We're Proudest Of

Results aside, more than one coach and parent from other clubs went out of their way this week to tell us how our players carried themselves - on and off the court, win or lose. Respectful, honest, easy to compete against even in the tightest games. That's not something that shows up in a bracket, but it's the thing we actually care most about building here.
